The Quranic Word Series: Daar

Today’s Quranic Word is Daar = دار

As we have seen in the video, the word daar means an abode where one finds convenience and rest temporarily or permanently. As we have seen in the previous post, the life of this world is temporary. It is a testing ground to see who truly believes in Allah and worships Him. The Quran says:

[Quran 29:64]

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter – that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

Those who disbelieve in the Hereafter take their homes in this world as the most important properties and assets. However, the believers are not deceived as they know that their true home is Paradise. The disbelievers have even said out of mockery that if there would be a home better than what they have now, it would be for them. That is why Allah challenged them and said:

[Quran 2:94]

Say, [O Muhammad], “If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.

The home of this world will either leave us or we leave it. Neither one will live forever.

Those who have taken their abode in this dunya and disbelieved in Allah will have their house destroyed, in the likes of Thamud1, ‘Aad and Qarun2. Allah made the believers inherit their homes in this world and they will inherit them in the Hereafter. 3

The disbelievers have prepared for their worldly home but Allah wants us to prepare for our home in the Hereafter. He wants us to strive hard in attaining it with whatever we have been given in this world. He says:

[Quran 28:77]

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter

So we have to prepare and work for the home of the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ in his funeral prayer used to pray that Allah replaces for the deceased a home better than his home. We find this in the following hadeeth:

It was narrated that Jubair bin Nufair Al-Hadrami said: “I heard ‘Awf bin Malik say: “I heard the Messenger of Allah offering the funeral prayer for one who had died, and I heard him say in his supplication: “O Allah, give him a home better than his home and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife, and admit him to Paradise and save him from Hellfire”

Names of the Home of the Hereafter

The home Allah promised the believers (Jannah) has been given different names, such as:

Daarul Qaraar

This means the Home of Settlement. This is because once we enter Jannah, we will have found our perfect home, and will never need to move again.4

Daarus Salaam

Daarus salaam is the Home of Peace. In Paradise, we will never experience any conflict, hear any bad speech or have any hatred towards anyone else.5

Daarul Muqaamah

This name means everlasting home. This is because Jannah will be an abode that will never end and from which there will be no departure that we will enjoy forever inshaAllah.6

Hellfire on the other hand has been described as a destructive home.

Daarul Bawaar

The permanent home of the disbelievers is the home of destruction, a place of continuous punishment.7

So we should do our best to please Allah SWT and earn His mercy so we can enter Jannah, our true home, inshaAllah
