The Quranic Word Series: Jannah

Today’s Quranic Word is Jannah =

The word Jannah means garden.

Its plural is Janaat =جنات = gardens.

As we have seen in the video, the word Jannah comes from the verb جن which means to cover. Jannah actually means garden but it is also used in the Quran to refer to Paradise. Allah says,

[Quran 34:15]

There was for [the tribe of] Saba’ in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], “Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord.”

A garden is called Jannah because it is covered by the leaves of its trees. Paradise is called Jannah because it is covered from us and we won’t be able to see it until we enter it InshaAllah. Some people obsess over their Jannah in this world. Like the man in Surah Al Kahf who only wanted to increase his wealth and property without thanking Allah or helping those less fortunate than his. Allah says,

[Quran 18:35]

And he entered his garden while he was unjust to himself. He said, “I do not think that this will perish – ever.

But as believers, our focus should be on the Jannah in the Hereafter. So strive to earn your place in Jannah and make du’a as it is the reward for our good deeds in this world. Allah says,

[Quran 16:32]

The ones whom the angels take in death, [being] good and pure; [the angels] will say, “Peace be upon you. Enter Paradise for what you used to do.”

Description of the Paradise Allah promised the Believers

Doors of Jannah

It has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ that Jannah has eight doors.

[Sahih al-Bukhari 3257]

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Paradise has eight gates, and one of them is called Ar-Rayyan through which none will enter but those who observe fasting.”

Rivers of Jannah

Allah informed us that Jannah has four rivers which are of milk, honey, water and wine. He says,

[Quran 47:15]

Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered, rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord, like [that of] those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?

Fruits of Jannah

The fruits in Jannah will be similar in appearance and name but the taste of the fruit will be different. Allah says,

[Quran 2:25]

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, “This is what we were provided with before.” And it is given to them in likeness.

Spouses in Paradise

[Quran 2:25]

And they will have therein purified spouses,

What Makes One a Resident of Jannah

There are a lot ways to enter Paradise and a lot of reasons a person can qualify to be a resident of Jannah, among which,

Believe in Allah and Righteous Deeds

The first condition for entering Paradise is to believe in Allah subhaanahu wa taala. If someone spends all of his lifetime doing good deeds and he didn’t believe in Allah; he has not done any good deed for himself. Because no account of good deeds will be recorded for him. Allah says,

[Quran 2:82]

But they who believe and do righteous deeds – those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.

Obedience to Allah and His Messenger

Allah informed us that obeying Him alone doesn’t suffice but we have to obey the Messenger which Allah sent to us. Whoever obeys Allah and his Messenger has been promised Jannah. Allah says,

[Quran 4:13]

These are the limits [set by] Allah, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted by Him to gardens [in Paradise] under which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment.

Being Upright upon the Religion

This is also among the reasons for someone to enter al Jannah; when he fulfills the obligations that are upon him and required of him by Allah and moves away from the prohibitions that are laid out for him.

[Quran 41:30]

Indeed, those who have said, “Our Lord is Allah” and then remained on a right course – the angels will descend upon them, [saying], “Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.

[Quran 3:142]

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allah has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?

May Allah admit us to His Paradise, Ameen.
