The Quranic Word Series: Maa’ (Water)

Today’s Quranic Word of the day is Maa’

Maa’ means water. Water is one of the greatest blessings we have been given. It is one we take for granted the most. It is one of the most vital creations of Allah and has been in existence before the creation of heaven, earth and human being. Allah says;

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days – and His Throne had been upon water – that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, “Indeed, you are resurrected after death,” those who disbelieve will surely say, “This is not but obvious magic.” {11:7}

Scientists have proven that water is in, on and above the earth. All places are surrounded by it. In the above verse we also see that Allah’s throne is above water. So this proves that water is also in the heavens as well.

Water and the Existence of Life

Around 71% of the Earth is covered with water but only 2% of that water is fresh and drinkable. Water plays an essential role in the existence of life. Without water there can be no life.

Everything Living

Regardless of the size, shape, color or density of a living thing, it was created from water. Every living thing, Allah created from water.

Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living ? Then will they not believe.{21:30}

Human Beings

Human beings have been created from water (semen) which is  the foundation of our creation. And the first man, Adam, may Allaah be pleased with him, was created from mud which is soil mixed with water. We find in the Quran,

And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation]. {25:34)

Plant life is diverse. The many different colors, textures and habitats are amazing. But these creations could not exists without water.

And you see the earth barren, but when We send down upon it rain, it quivers and swells and grows [something] of every beautiful kind. {22:35}

Sources of Water

There is only one major source of water on Earth and it is sent down by Allah.

Rain water

This is the water that is sent down by Allah from the heaven. It is pure, clean, odorless, tasteless, colorless and full of minerals that the body requires to be healthy.1 Every body of water on the face of the Earth originated from this primary source

Other sources

These are the secondary sources of water as all of them derived theirs from the water sent down from heaven by Allah. We have some that stay underground like groundwater, springs, wells, and lakes. Allah says that these come from the rain.2

So, we know that the primary source of water is clean. But after it settles on the Earth some sources remain clean and others become unclean, depending on what the water has come in contact with after it came down. The Prophet ﷺ said;

It was narrated that Abu Umamah Al-Bahili said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Water is not made impure by anything except that which changes its smell, taste and color”.

One in 10 people on earth live without clean water and dirty water causes a death every 10 seconds.3 So those of us who have been blessed with clean water should be grateful and ensure we don’t waste it. The Prophet ﷺ forbade us from wasting water, even from a river. And we should try our best to help those who are less fortunate than us.

Purpose of Water

Water has been given to us as a means of purification. Allah ordered us to use it for ghusl (Islamic bath) and wudhoo (ablution).4 If you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves.

There are times that finding water maybe difficult, unhealthy or dangerous. In these cases if water is found and can be used, it is prefereable. However if water can not be found and you are on a journey or go to relieve youself, it is permissible to use clean earth. Having an illness that water may make worse is also a circumstance where leaving it off for a moment is acceptable

Water serves the purpose of drinking for humans and animals which help to regulate their body systems. The human body is made up of 60-70% water.

Every part of the body needs it to function. It acts as a lubricant for joints, regulates body temperature, and flushes out waste. Science has shown a person can go approximately 3 weeks without food but if a person went without water, he would perish within 3-7 days. Allaah says;

And We have sent the fertilizing winds and sent down water from the sky and given you drink from it. And you are not its retainers. {15:22}

We have many detergents and cleansers on the market today with their various claims to cleanliness. Often, what we are actually paying for is for things to smell good or lather up well. Water washes and purifies everything, even if it doesn’t have the smell of perfume.

The Prophet ﷺ reported that a woman came for advice about her monthly cycle and purifying her clothing during this time. He told her that it was sufficient that she wash her garments with water.

There are some parts of the world that an inadequate source of water to maintain life. Examples of this would be your desert regions. (Sahara Desert, Mojave, Arabian, Kalahari, etc) In order to maintain life, water must be irrigated from its original source to the place where it needs to be used, like gardens to grow food. The importance of water can not be emphasised enough.

So, let us not waste the water that we are given and preserve the source of that water so that we can show Allah our gratefulness by using it to sustain us here on Earth.
