Today’s Qur’aan Word of the Day is Rizq
Its plural is Arzaaq
Rizq means provision. It includes everything that we have been provided with by Allaah. Wealth is a form of provision but it is not the only thing that Allah has provided us with. He ﷻ provided us with external things like food, shelter and clothing. He also provides us with internal things like knowledge, love and guidance.
Provisions and the Lordship of Allaah
The ability to provide for all creatures is one of the attributes that show the Lordship of Allaah ﷻ as no one can ever do or try this. If someone provides to another it is only from what he has been given from the provision of Allaah and this attribute should direct us to His worship alone. Allaah says;
O mankind, remember the favor of Allah upon you. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?
But as for those who are ingrates and still persist in associating partners with Allaah, He cited for them an example in the Qur’aan with the provisions that He has provided for them. He says;
And Allah has favored some of you over others in provision. But those who were favored would not hand over their provision to those whom their right hands possess so they would be equal to them therein. Then is it the favor of Allah they reject?
Meaning that, the ignorant ones and disbelievers would not accept for their servants and slaves to have an equal share in their wealth which Allaah has provided for them, so how is it that Allaah would accept His servants to be His equal in Divinity, Glory and Power.
One of Allaah’s beautiful names is Ar-Razaaq as nobody truly provides for us but Allaah. He created His creations and never expected any provision from anyone of them instead He wants them to submit and worship Him. Allaah says;
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.
Indeed, it is Allah who is the [continual] Provider, the firm possessor of strength.
Distribution of Provision
The quantity of provision that one has is not a sign of Allaah’s love or anger, instead it is a test to see how you will react to what you have been given. He provides for animals and others; those that we know and those that we do not. Allaah says;
And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage. All is in a clear register.
The one who receives these provisions is only known to Allaah and has been destined according to His will and the quantity he will receive is known to Him and has been destined and willed. Allaah says;
Allah extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.
Allaah provides for everyone. Either you believe in Him or don’t. The provision for the believers is a little enjoyment for them in this world and in the hereafter they will have more but for the unbelievers it is allurement and serves as bait for them so that their punishment will be much on that day. When Prophet Ibraheem may the peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him supplicated that Allaah should provide only for those who believe, Allaah responded and those who disbelieve too. Allaah says,
And [mention] when Abraham said, “My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits – whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day.” [ Allah ] said. “And whoever disbelieves – I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination.”
Those people who have been limited in their provision should show patience and those who have been given a lots of provision should be grateful. So let us show gratitude to Allaah for His provision.
What Increases Someone’s Provisions
1. Piety and Faith: Allaah ﷻ promised to provide for those who believe in Him and are pious. This is because they are most entitled to whatever provision they need from Allaah as they are obedient and submissive. Allaah says;
And whoever fears Allah – He will make for him a way out
And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
2. Reliance on Allaah: Among those things that increase one’s provision is relying on Allaah ﷻ because the provision that one will get in this world has been written down in the womb and if he runs away from this provision it will surely meet him the same way his death will surely meet him. Allaah says;
And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him.
Likewise, it has been reported from the Prophet, ﷺ that;
‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: “If you all depend on Allah with due reliance, He would certainly give you provision as He gives it to birds who go forth hungry in the morning and return with their bellies full at dusk”.
3. Seeking Forgiveness: Sins also cause provisions to be prevented or delayed if one sins to Allaah much, he may experience this. One of the ways to get out of this is by seeking forgiveness from Allaah. The example of this is what Prophet Nuh, may the peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him, said to his people. Allaah says in the Quran;
And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver.
He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.
4. Supplication: Allaah has already promised whoever calls on Him; He will surely answer with whatever he asks. So, if someone asks for provisions from Allaah, He will grant it by His mercy. The likes of this is what Prophet Isa, may the peace and blessing of Allaah be upon him, did when his people demanded for provisions from him. He called unto Allaah and Allaah sent down a table full of food. Allaah says,
Said Jesus, the son of Mary, “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers.”
Allah said, “Indeed, I will sent it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you – then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds.
From the supplication is the recommended one from our Prophet ﷺ, as it has been narrated that he used to say;
It was narrated from Umm Salamah that when the Prophet (ﷺ) performed the Subh (morning prayer), while he said the Salam, he would say: ‘Allahumma inni as’aluka ‘ilman nafi’an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa ‘amalan mutaqabbalan (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, goodly provision and acceptable deeds).’”
5. Giving Charity: Giving charity to the poor, needy and less privileged, showing mercy to them makes Allaah show mercy to someone too. By doing this Allaah will increase the provision of someone. It has been authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that no day will come except that two angels will descend from the heaven; one saying that: O Allaah compensate the one that spends from his provision and the other will say: O Allaah decrease the provision of the one that withholds it, and if they go they will never return in another day until the day of resurrection. Also Allaah says;
But whatever thing you spend [in His cause] – He will compensate it; and He is the best of providers.
6. Joining the Ties of Kinship: Among the ways to increase one’s provision from Allaah is by joininb the ties of kinship. The Prophet, ﷺ said;
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “Whoever is pleased that he be granted more wealth and that his lease of life be pro longed, then he should keep good relations with his Kith and kin.”
