The Quranic Word Series: Haqq

Today’s Quranic Word for the Day is Haqq =

Haqq means truth or the right. Its plural form is huqooq =

As we have seen in the video, haqq literally means “truth” or “the right” depending on context. One of Allah’s beautiful names is Al-Haqq. Allah SWT is the ultimate source of truth and everything.

[Quran 31:30]

That is because Allah is the Truth, and that which they call upon other than Him is falsehood, and because Allah is the Most High, the Grand.

From this we see that Allah is the Truth and all that is affiliated to Him is truth. His promises are the truth, His Book is the truth, and His messengers are the truth. That is why the Prophet ﷺ used to make this supplication when he would wake up for tahajud prayer:

[Sahih al-Bukhari 1120]

(O Allah! All the praises are for you, You are the Holder of the Heavens and the Earth, And whatever is in them … And all the praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your Promise is the truth, And to meet You is true, Your Word is the truth And Paradise is true And Hell is true And all the Prophets (Peace be upon them) are true; And Muhammad is true, And the Day of Resurrection is true

Allah SWT is the Truth

In the Quran, Allah SWT tells us that He is the Truth. So too are His words and everything affiliated with Him.

Referring to Himself as the Truth

[Quran 23:71]

But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined. Rather, We have brought them their message, but they, from their message, are turning away.

Referring to the Quran as the Truth

[Quran 43:29]

However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of Makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

Referring to the Justice that Allah Commanded

[Quran 21:112]

[The Prophet] has said, “My Lord, judge [between us] in truth. And our Lord is the Most Merciful, the one whose help is sought against that which you describe.”

Referring to Tawheed that the Messengers Called to

[Quran 37:37]

Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous] messengers.

Referring to the Religion of Islam as the Truth

[Quran 17:81]

And say, “Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.”

All these things are the truth from Allah and have their rights that need to be fulfilled to Him and everyone.

Fulfiling Two Types of Rights

Our religion teaches us that we must fulfil two types of rights: the rights of Allah and the rights of the people.

The Rights of the Creator

Fulfilling the rights of Allah is to worship Him alone without a partner, to follow His commands and refrain from His prohibitions. The Prophet ﷺ said to Mu’adh bin Jabal (RA) in a hadith:

[Sahih al-Bukhari 2856]

The Prophet asked, “O Mu`adh! Do you know what Allah’s right on His slaves are, and what the right of His slaves on Him is?” I replied, “Allah and His Apostle know better.” He said, “Allah’s right on His slaves is that they should worship Him (Alone) and should not worship any besides Him. And slave’s right on Allah is that He should not punish him who worships none besides Him.”

The Rights of the Creation

Fulfiling the rights of creation starts from oneself, as the body has its rights. After this, we need to fulfil the rights of our spouses and family, the rights of the community, the rights of the poor, and even the rights of animals.

It has been reported in the hadith of Abdullaah bin Amr (RA) from the Prophet ﷺ that:

[Sahih al-Bukhari 6134]

Allah’s Apostle entered upon me and said, “Have I not been informed that you offer prayer all the night and fast the whole day?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Do not do so; Offer prayer at night and also sleep; Fast for a few days and give up fasting for a few days because your body has a right on you, and your eye has a right on you, and your guest has a right on you, and your wife has a right on you. I hope that you will have a long life, and it is sufficient for you to fast for three days a month as the reward of a good deed, is multiplied ten times, that means, as if you fasted the whole year.”

A Life of Integrity is Rooted in Truth & Rights

Allah tells us in the Quran to give our relatives, the needy, the traveler, and those who are deprived their rights. He said

[Quran 30:38]

So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah, and it is they who will be the successful.

[Quran 51:19]

And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.

Here in this verse, Allah tells us that He wants us to judge between people with the truth in order to maintain peace and order in the community. Therefore, the truth is the only thing that can keep society in order. Allah says:

[Quran 4:105]

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate.

So we should always check to see that we are following the right of Allah and His creation. To help us do so, we should often recite the du’a that Umar RA used to make:

[Sharḥ al-Muntahá al-Irādāt 3/497]

“O Allah, let us see the truth as truth and bless us to follow it and let us see the falsehood as falsehood and bless us to refrain from it.”
